Especially in very dynamic sports like tennis, which involve fast rallies, athletes, referees and the audience need to be able to keep their eyes on the ball at all times. High-performance lighting not only ensures an excellent playing experience, but also significantly reduces the risk of injury and prevents signs of fatigue among tennis players.
The choice of the right LED floodlights depends on the level of competition of the tennis court as well as on the local conditions and the individual requirements of the sports facility operator.
What are the requirements for tennis court lighting?
When calculating the requirements for soccer fields, the standard 12193 "Light and lighting - sports facility lighting" is followed. Compliance with the guidelines of this standard is usually important for obtaining subsidies. Important key data from the standard for tennis courts are illustrated here in our diagram
Main area
In tennis, the main surface refers to the designated "court" as well as to an extra playing area around the designated area.
The calculation grid specifies the arrangement of calculation and measurement points and their number in each direction of the reference surface of the main surface.
Total area
The total area consists of main area plus an additional security area outside this main area.
The calculation grid is also used to verify compliance with the set requirements for a new lighting system for a tennis court.
The photometric requirements depend on the lighting class.
Illumination intensity
The horizontal illuminance is measured at ground level. There are requirements that for the total area of the tennis court, the illuminance must reach ≥ 75% and the uniformity ≥ 75% of the value of the main area.
Glare & colour rendering
For glare rating, a maximum GR value of 55 shall be achieved. The GR (Glare Rating) is a calculation method for glare in outdoor areas. It is also important that the lighting ensures a high colour rendering index.
